| On another mini-mailing list, someone protested how nowadays they give
away the conclusion of upcoming movies during the trailers for that
movie. This started a train of thought, and I responded :
Yeah, that's extremely annoying. But you know what also gets me, personally, as long as we're talking gripes? When they started showing actual 30-second commercials for half a freakin' hour before the movie starts. They used to show us cartoons, to relax us, warm us up, and get us in the mood for the movie. They would do this in huge screens in single-screen theatres. Now, they show a million commercials in tiny screens that might as well be your 27-inch tv at home in multiplexes with 20 screens. Commercialism/capitalism is where you create something great and sell it to people who want it. Overcommercialism is where you will kill, maim, and destroy the meaning of anything in order to wrench the very last possible penny out of it, regardless of whom you hurt or how much you damage the Earth. The way in which the overcommercializers have been allowed to take over the country by a long-term wave of conservatism in this country blows chunks big time. It blows. Christmas is not about showing someone that you would jump in front of a bus for them. It's about being pressured by commercials into buying the most expensive present possible. Buying expensive things is the most natural way for humans to show love, isn't it? And don't forget, (the commercials tell you), never mind that the finest and most tender sentiments burn brightly in your heart for your beloved. The highly dubious feelings that you mendaciously claim to have seem questionable, unless you get them that $2.95 card from Hallmark, because that's the best way to show someone that you care. And yes, your beloved will check to make sure it's a real Hallmark. Overcommercialism destroys our movie experiences, sucks the meaning out of our holidays, makes a business tool out of the formerly wonderful internet, plasters the countryside with billboards, induces polluting companies to piss in your drinking water, makes the info-thieving consumer profile industry egregiously violate your privacy, and destroys the last few stands of ancient trees we have left. Overcommercialism sucks, and it is destroying what it means to be human and to enjoy the only real joys we all are natural heirs to; an unspoiled Earth, and our greatest treasure, each other. |
