The List Has Too Much Off-Topic Conversation
Some people sometimes feel that the list is veering far away from its original intention. They joined the list so they c ould talk about XYZ, but everone is too busy engaging in completely unrelated chatter. This can be very frustrating because the person will wonder where the on-topic conversations are.

There have been instances of people speaking up on the list, with exactly this complaint. They will ask, "Why aren't we talking more about XYZ?". Usually the response is understanding and friendly. Usually the list regulars tend to reply with something like "Yes, we joined this list because we love that topic, do you have a personal point-of-view about it?" In other words, they will invite you to jump in with your own thoughts.

Come on in, the water's great

Mailing lists will often start up with a particular topic in mind, and almost regardless of any efforts by anyone, will soon show the truth about human beings - that we are very social animals. As people become comfortable in the group, they may share a personal story. Others may join in.

Soon it becomes like a dinner party. Just because the dinner party is to celebrate, say, someone's graduation, it doesn't mean that you are required by law to discuss only the graduation and absolutely no other topic. What actually happens in such parties is that the graduation becomes the major topic, the reason that brought everyone together. It is a natural topic which anyone will discuss with you, if you bring it up.

But other side conversations take place too, and people enjoy that socialization as well. Any time that you wish to bring the party back to the topic of the graduation, all you have to do is contribute your thoughts on the topic of the day.

So, the solution to this one is easy . . .
