If
you must leave me and my pages
: (
<sniffle, sniffle>
here are some good places to go
How to use this page
Of course, your surfing style is up to you, but if I may I would recommend
that you use this page as an index. Check out the places I link to,
then hit the "back" button on your browser to come back here to this
page again, and check out the next place I link to. I would have done
this with frames, but not everyone has a frames-capable browser.
NO Commercialism
If
you read the FAQ, you know that I hate over-commercialism, and that
I think every single company that has commercialized the internet should
have its head shoved into a toilet. No one paid me anything to mention
them here, I just think the pages below give away some good and helpful
information for free. So, rest assured, the recommendations below are
from the heart. My opinion's not for sale.
Crime and safety
The cops have a web site that shows
you the location and types of crime at an address or intersection
that you name. Great for when you have a potential place you're thinking
of moving into.
News and information
- Local
TV stations
- (FOX)
KTVU-TV, Channel 2<=== The best journalism in the Bay Area
- Main
Page - When you come to SF this Oakland-based TV station
provides very good journalistic coverage.
- (ABC)
KGO-TV, Channel 7 <=== Sensationalist and fluffy yellow journalism
- (NBC)
KRON-TV, Channel 4
- (CBS)
KPIX-TV, Channel 5
- Local
Radio Stations (My favorite)
- KKSF
Extremely cool station, in terms of community policies and low number
of commercials. Jazzy / New Age. Excellent for relaxation, but no
"muzak". They play "everything but the girl", Badu, Steve Winwood,
Peter Gabriel, David Arkenstone, Mary Black, Julia Fordham, etc. Lots
of great music, few commercials, lots of good community involvement
especially in the anti-AIDS fight.
- KQED
The local PBS affiliate. Support KQED!
- Local
newspapers
Getting a job
Classifieds
sfgate
classifieds
Both SF newspapers have their job, rental, and real estate
classifieds online, and they're searchable. Very cool.
Contracting
Agencies
D.I.C.E
All of the SF/Silicon Valley contract agencies have banded together
in an organization called "DICE", the something, something Contractor's
Exchange. All the agencies post the contracts they have available,
a very good resource.
monster.com
A resume posting & job search web site, tends to focus more
on permanent positions than on contracting ones like DICE.
craigslist
(See below)
The everything resource
craigslist
You've heard me talk about craigslist, the virtual singles bar / flea
market / water cooler for the locals. Use the classified areas
to find stuff, jobs, etc. Use the forums for chatting on all
subjects of everyday living.
Finding a place to live
I've
had good experiences with the two online rental agencies listed below.
There's probably little difference between the two, since most landlords
and landladies probably list with both. craigslist is great though.
- Average
rents - This page summarizes what kind of rents you'll be
looking at, per neighborhood. Take your heart medicine and sit down
first.
MetroRent
- I have a slight preference for MetroRent, maybe because of their
web site design and their operation somehow has a bit of a more
human feel to it.
- RentTech
- They have a fun commercial, and I believe they're the ones who
offer photos of the front of the places for rent as seen from the
street.
- craigslist's
SF apartments
- A fantastic and free rental resource.
Shows
- Laserium
This is that great, fantastic, gotta-see-it laser show place I talked
about in the Visiting page.
- Beach
Blanket Babylon
This is the comical musical revue, a San Francisco classic, more fun
than a barrel of monkeys.
Museums
(Isn't the plural of "museum" actually "musea"?)
Pets
- Fort
Funston Dog
A group of doggie people who like to walk at Fort Funston
have joined forces.
- SF
Dog - A more general site for SF dog people.
- SPCA
- Has a no-kill policy, the building is great, and the animals are
kept in a grand hotel style. Support them, they deserve it. I got
my crazy kitty from them. They have medical facilities too.
- craigslist's
pet forum
- You can ask (or answer) all kinds of pet-related questions and concerns.
- Pet
food and supplies
Sunset Pet Supply (2226 Taraval near 32nd Av) is a pretty cool store
for pet food & pet stuff. It used to be named something else and
just wasn't set up very well, but it was all we had in the the neighborhood.
Then some cool new owners took it over and made some changes that
made the store more welcoming and better arranged. I prefer to support
this kind of local neighborhood store than the impersonal chains with
horrible animal cruelty histories. Sunset Pet Supply tends to carry
the good quality stuff, unlike the terrible supermarket pet food that
contains sawdust and other junk. After the change in ownership, everything
about this store is far more positive and a good place to go to.
- Pet
Hospital (Non-Emergency)
They're across from Sunset Pet Supply, making Taraval at 32nd what
I call "Pet Alley". (There's also a pet grooming place on
the same block.) I've had my kitties seen at this hospital. They seem
nice but my only observation is about the turnover in vets. Maybe
it's endemic to the profession, or because I have only gone there
a few times. Of course you can also go to the SPCA near 16th and Bryant
in the Mission/Potrero area.
- Pet
Hospital (Emergency)
I'm sorry I can't say much about this place because (thankfully) I
have never needed to use it. It's on 9th avenue near Irving, I think.
I'll get better info for you, but in the meantime if you have an emergency,
rush your pet to this area and someone will direct you to the hospital.
The SPCA in the Mission/Potrero area near 16th and Bryant can also
look at your pet.

Other
neighborhood guides
- The
SFGate neighborhood guide
Geared
largely to color descriptions of the shopping to be found in each
neighborhood. Still good, with other interesting details, worth a
look.
The SF Bay Area in usenet
You
can find Bay-Area specific newsgroups in the ba.* hierarchy in your
news reader. You could use Netscape for that, but I recommend WinVN
or Free Agent for newsreading, web browsers have newsreading capabilities
but they really aren't very good at it.
