See? It's not that bad. It's not covered over with graffitti or crawling
with muggers. Even our inner city doesn't look all bombed out like what
you'd expect in New York.. SF is a pretty safe city overall, but be aware
that this is one of the least safe areas in the city. There is some street
crime and the usual thugs extorting shopkeepers, illegal fun to be had,
but it tends to leave you alone if you leave it alone. The Century
theatre is an adult entertainment venue.

This is what I mean by "redeems itself" - down that street is
a hole-in-the wall but very good Vietnamese restaurant. I took these pictures
while walking around waiting for the Great American Music Hall (not pictured,
but it was up the street a little) to open. The GAMH is a wonderful venue,
very baroquely ornate, where fairly well-known acts can play to a larger
audience in an intimate setting.

That's what's amazing about the Tenderloin, parts of it look seedy but turn
your head and parts of it can look nice too.

It's called "The Tenderloin" because in the old days the cops
who patrolled this, ahem, feisty area were paid extra for their hardship
and were therefore able to afford the better cuts of meat. The locals call
it "The 'Loin". The people here are generally a mix of those on
the lowest socioeconomic rung of San Francisco, which often means just a
poor family new to the area, trying to make it and trying to have a decent
living. But it also means some homeless, some prostitutes, long-term hotels
with colorful guests, most of it pretty discreet. It also has some great
and trendy restaurants and bars, some remarkable night life, and some excellent
and cheap food. It's an area full of contradictions, being near the city's
most expensive area, Nob Hill.
