What is a Listserv and how does it work? A Listserv is an Internet structure for discussion through email. People subscribe (sign up, for free) to a particular Listserv on a subject that interests them. They become a member and then receive all the postings (messages) to their regular email account from other members. They can choose to just read the postings, but they can also post their own messages. When they submit a message it goes out to every member of the Listserv. Many Listservs are moderated, which means the initial posting goes first to the moderator who screens all the postings according to the criteria of the Listserv before sending it out to all the members. As people respond to the postings of others on the same general topic or specific point, the discussion often develops into a thread. There may be several threads active at the same time. A person can subscribe to as many Listservs as they want to depending on their interests and the amount of time they want to spend reading and posting. Some Listservs generate a large number of postings daily on a variety of threads that may last for a long time. On other Listservs members may only receive messages periodically as a topic emerges. One can unsubscribe at any point by following the instructions for that particular Listserv. How does the SFC Listserv work? The Listserv fits the Vision of the SFC very well: "To be a center of sound thinking, organized by Bowen natural systems theory, functioning as a leading force in a network of interconnected systems." It provides the infrastructure for the Syracuse Family Center to provide a network for the development of thinking and action grounded in Bowen theory. It is a place where people can, for example: explore ideas they would like to test out; follow-up discussions from conferences after they get home; or generate discussion about a new book or article . How do I subscribe to the SFC Listserv? On the SFC website homepage click on Listserv on the left side of the page. On the SFC Listserv page, click on "Visit the SFC Listserv." This will take you to the SFC Listserv at Yahoo Groups which manages the SFC Listserv. Once there, as a "guest," you can just read the messages that have been posted by simply clicking on "Messages." However, you will not receive the current messages sent to you via email, nor will you be able to post your own messages unless you "join" the group (i.e. "become a member," or "subscribe"). To join, click on "Join this group" on the Yahoo Groups SFC Listserv page. Then sign up for a Yahoo Group ID by filling out the information and following their instructions. Once you have a Yahoo Group ID you use it with your password to sign in when you visit the SFC Listserv Click here to send a subscription message. You don't need anything in the subject line or the body of the message! -OR- Visit our listserv membership page at Yahoogroups.com and sign up there. |
